Each week, you will be asked to respond to the prompt or prompts in the discussion forum. Your initial post should be 75-150 words in length, and you should respond to two additional posts from your peers.
This week the focus of your studies is on communication. We communicate all the time at home, at work, and at school. Managers must be mindful of what types of communication types they are using and if they are the most effective.
Find a YouTube or other movie clip, dated within the last 8 weeks, that shows two or more people communicating (from a tv show, video, news, a movie, etc.) What type of communication is it? Why do you think so? Was it effective? Would a different form have been more effective? Why or why not?
Review a minimum of two of your classmate’s posts and respond with additional insights, information, questions, or links to more information on communication types and/or examples. Do you agree with their assessment of the type of communication occurring in their video and if it’s most appropriate? Why or why not? Your responses should be academic in nature and linked to research and management topics discussed this week rather than personal stories of shopping with the company they chose for example.
While the prompt didn’t necessarily require the video be from our milestone company, I found several videos and discussions on Delta. So, I decided to go with an interview with the CEO, Ed Bastian, for consistency. sake.
This clip is from April 10th and is a CNBC news anchor asking questions to Ed Bastian regarding the Q1 numbers, which were very good. The type of communication is obviously interpersonal and oral since the news anchor asks questions to Bastain, to which, he replies. This type of communication was effective as the interview was brief (about a minute and a half) and the questions gave quick insight to the CEO’s perspective on the earnings. Also, this short clip can be easily seen by Delta employees or Delta stakeholders. The message is clear and well understood.
If this same interview was done in written form it would not be as effective. For example, the CEO would have to take significantly more time to answer the questions on paper vice speak them in real time. The CEO may not have time or desire to make the time for this. Also, employees or stakeholders may not receives the interview text for some amount of time. The amount of time required could push into the next quarter making this information out of date and irrelevant.
This week I found a WWE interview to show effective communication. The type of communication being used in the video is oral communication. I think that it would be labeled as oral because it is two people communication face to face by use of words being spoken and the communication prompts a response. I think the communication process was very successful. The message and the delivery were clear, concise, and to the point by both parties involved. The interviewee effectively listened to the interviewer’s question and once prompted to respond, provided a well thought out explanation for his actions. In this scenario, a different method would not be effective due to the nature of the interview and its intent to setup a suspenseful future wrestling battle.
